MONIQUE VIEIRA ART
The Full Story
The Artist
I have always been drawn to creating art that makes an emotion feel tangible. My practice began through sculptural mixed-media work, where I explored memory, vulnerability, identity, and the experiences that quietly shape us. I was drawn to building surfaces, textures, and forms with my hands because I wanted my work to exist beyond a flat image to feel present, almost as though the emotion itself had taken physical form.
My transition into floral sculpture came from a much more personal place: my love for flowers. I have always been captivated by their softness, colour, movement, and the way a bouquet can instantly change how a space feels. There is something deeply emotional about receiving or seeing flowers, the feeling of happiness, beauty, and presence that exists in that particular moment. But flowers are also temporary. They bloom, change, and eventually disappear.
My work is rooted in the idea of freezing a bouquet in time and placing that moment onto a canvas. A traditional painting can capture the image of a bouquet, but my sculptures allow the flowers to exist beyond the picture. They extend into the viewer's space, creating the feeling that the bouquet is still there; still blooming, still present, but suspended in time.
This floral journey has become a new chapter in my practice. While my earlier work explored the heavier and more introspective sides of emotion, my floral sculptures allow me to explore beauty, joy, nostalgia, and the fleeting moments that make life feel meaningful. I want my work to create that small pause when someone encounters a bouquet and simply feels happy for a moment.
I sculpt each flower by hand, building compositions that exist somewhere between a painting and a bouquet. Through this process, I hope to preserve not only the flowers themselves, but the feeling of being present with something beautiful before it inevitably changes.
